Germany is the 18th country to join the UNC and the first since Italy returned to the UN headquarters in 2013.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, speaking at a ceremony at the U.S. military headquarters in Pyongyang, South Korea, called the move a “clear signal” of Berlin’s commitment to peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
Germany sought to join the UN force as early as 2019 and expressed interest again earlier this year.
The United Nations Command was established in July 1950. After the Korean War, the UN Command’s responsibility was to maintain the ceasefire and diplomatic relations between North and South Korea.
Reuters reported this.
