The Minister of Gender, Social and Community Development, Jean Muonaowauza Sendeza, on Monday lamented the rampant child abuse in our communities.

Sendza, while briefing journalists at Parliament Hill in Lilongwe, condemned families who abuse children. However, the minister commended the Malawi Police for assisting in arresting child abusers. The minister cited the abuse that took place in Baraka where a little girl was tied to a tree and beaten.
“It is sad that our children face huge challenges at the hands of their parents and that is why I want to commend the Malawi Police Service for doing an excellent job in arresting the above mentioned criminals,” he said.
The Minister then announced that the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, in collaboration with various partners, will commemorate the Day of the African Child 2024 with the African continent on Friday, July 26, 2024.
The Minister said the theme of this year’s celebration is “Quality and Inclusive Education for All Children in Malawi: Act Now!”
Sendza said the theme highlights the country’s commitment to addressing education gaps and ensuring every child’s right to education.
“While Malawi has made significant progress towards promoting equitable and relevant education for all children, challenges such as poverty, child abuse, gender-based violence and the impact of natural disasters remain; preventing many Malawian children from accessing an equitable and relevant education,” she said.
The Minister said that in recognition of these challenges, the Government through the Ministry of Education has been proactively undertaking various initiatives aimed at improving educational opportunities across the country.
“Other initiatives include building new schools and expanding existing educational facilities to accommodate the growing number of students,” she said.
She also said the government through her ministry is strengthening early childhood development programmes to ensure that young children receive the necessary basic education.
“In addition, the government is committed to addressing the teacher shortage by recruiting more educators and providing necessary resources to improve the quality and relevance of education. The implementation of the Safe Schools programme further emphasizes on creating safer learning environments which is essential for the holistic development of children,” she concluded.
