Galmont Hotel & Spa has taken a notable step towards sustainability by winning the prestigious Green Tourism Gold Award, recognising the company’s focus on reducing its environmental impact.
This is the second year that the Galmont Hotel has participated in the Green Tourism Awards certification program. Thanks to the hard work of its sustainability-minded team, the hotel has risen from bronze level to gold level in just 12 months, becoming the first hotel in the national MHL hotel group to receive this honor.
Eco updates the city centre hotel has made so far to help reduce its carbon footprint include: installing electric car charging stations in the hotel car park (more will be added this year); a staggering 85% reduction in landfill waste since introducing new sorting methods, providing refillable in-room toiletries and switching to biodegradable takeaway cups and straws (which are compostable, while the lids are recyclable). Used kitchen oil is sent to a biodiesel plant for recycling, and all packaging used to transport food is recovered and reused by the hotel’s suppliers.
General Manager Stefan Lundstrom said they were delighted to receive the Gold Certification, which recognises The Galmont’s strong sustainability philosophy.
“Over the past twelve months we have invested in our people by providing training to the newly formed Galmont Green Committee and by providing opportunities for teams on the ground to review their own practices to become more environmentally conscious.
“The hotel continues to invest in sustainable practices, which currently include: upgrading the hotel boiler, LED lighting which now covers over 95% of the hotel area, and fortnightly energy usage meetings where actions are agreed and communicated to the team.
“Since 2022, we have reduced natural gas usage by 19.6% and electricity usage by 16.2% per room sold. We also plan to reduce total natural gas consumption by 20% and total electricity consumption by 10% by the end of 2024. There is still a lot of work to be done, but this certification is a great morale boost and shows the entire team that the measures we are taking will not go unnoticed.
