Israel’s defense minister announced during a meeting with officials from the Joe Biden administration in Washington that “significant progress” had been made in dealing with shipments of U.S. ammunition and weapons to Israel.
Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a video on social media, claiming that the US government refused to ship the necessary weapons to Israel.
The video was met with negative reaction from US officials, with the Biden administration calling it a surprise.
“No country has ever and will ever help Israel defend itself like the United States has,” said White House National Security Advisor John Kirby, recalling U.S. support for Israel during Tehran’s drone attacks on the country.
The purpose of Yoav Galant’s trip is to ease existing tensions between the two countries against the backdrop of Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim that Washington refuses to send weapons.
On Wednesday, July 6, Yoav Galant spoke about easing these tensions after meeting with White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, but it is unclear whether the Biden administration will call off the issue of blocking Israel’s 2,500-pound bomb.
Yoav Galant also discussed with Sullivan “Israel’s commitment to ensuring the safe return of Israeli communities to their homes along the northern border as security realities in the region change,” the IDF office said in a statement.
Galant met with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Tuesday and said the United States is seeking a diplomatic deal to calm the situation between Israeli troops and Hezbollah militants on the Israel-Lebanon border.
Exchanges of fire and missile attacks between Hezbollah and Israel in recent months have led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border, with rising tensions fuelling fears of an all-out war in the region.
Washington is trying to find a diplomatic solution to prevent the conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah from spreading, but its efforts have so far been unsuccessful.
The UN Security Council resolution stated that Israel hopes Hezbollah will withdraw to the other side of the Litani River, 30 kilometers from the border.
Meanwhile, Mr. Galant recently warned that Israel was preparing for a major operation in Lebanon.
His office also announced that he had discussed with Sullivan the importance of working together “to counter Iranian aggression and its nuclear ambitions.”
Israel’s defense minister called Iran’s nuclear program a threat to the world and warned the Islamic Republic could acquire nuclear weapons during a meeting with U.S. officials in Washington on Tuesday.
Israel has long sounded the alarm about Iran’s nuclear programme and accuses the Islamic Republic of seeking nuclear weapons.
