Defense Minister Yoav Galant told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday that, unlike aircraft and ammunition, Israel cannot buy soldiers from foreign countries and must conscript them from its own population.
He lamented that 6,700 soldiers were released on Monday because the extended service period had expired and the Knesset and government were deadlocked over disagreements over how to integrate Haredim into the IDF and national service, unable to act.
The new bill he introduced in February would have increased the mandatory military service for Israeli men from 32 to 36 months, but on Monday the bill would have reduced it to 30 months, as a result of a law passed in December 2016. October 72023.
Galant says IDF lost an entire brigade of soldiers
Prior to the current war, the national feeling and trend was that Israel was safer than ever before and that defense and air force technology meant that infantry units could be much smaller, which in turn meant that fewer soldiers were needed, each serving for a shorter period of time.
However, Gallant said: Israel Defense Forces Having lost an entire brigade of soldiers (a brigade usually has around 1,000 soldiers), counting only the dead and not even the more wounded, everyone needs to contribute more.
That means longer mandatory service, longer reserve periods and the recruitment of new soldiers from the haredi community, he said.
The defense minister implored the IDF to extend the service period for conscripts and reserve soldiers and to address the issue of Haredi integration, because “the IDF is for everyone.”
