Libreville, Wednesday, July 24, 2024 (Infos Gabon) – The post of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will be vacant at the end of 2025 after the French Audrey Azoulay takes office.

This position is coveted by several member states of this structure, and Gabon decided to present its candidacy during the ministerial meeting held in Libreville on Tuesday, July 23. I am Mr. Noël Nelson Messone, 64 years old, currently serving as Ambassador of Gabon to the United States.

The Gabonese candidate for UNESCO Director-General is a quiet, calm and cautious man, born on December 22, 1960 in Oouan, in the Mfon department of Ogouai-Iwendo.

Noël Nelson Messone has an excellent academic record. He holds a PhD in Political Economics from the University of Kentucky (USA), a Master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Trade from the “Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Business” in Lexington, Kentucky, and another diploma from the University of Paris-Nouveau Sorbonne.

The former government member has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Forestry, Environment and Conservation of Natural Resources, and Minister of Relations with Constitutional Institutions. He also served as Director of State Protocol under former President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

He served as Senior Political Advisor to the Secretary General of the International Organization of la Francophonie (OIF) in Paris (2003-2007). Previously, he served as Regional Director for West Africa at Agence. Nelson MESSONE has also held other important positions, including within the United States Peace Corps in Gabon.

Ambassador of Gabon to the Benelux countries and the European Union, and Permanent Representative of Gabon to the United Nations.

Noël Nelson Messone served as a Gabonese senator and deputy to the National Assembly for the Mphon Province before being appointed Gabon’s ambassador to the United States.

If selected by the General Conference, Noel Nelson Messoni will be part of the vast strategic transformation plan of the Organization launched by Audrey Azoulay, which aims to place UNESCO at the centre of the challenges of the 21st century and enable it to meet the great challenges of our time.

She worked to position UNESCO as a platform for human cooperation, a forum for setting standards and an expert body that helps spread knowledge and awareness to as many people as possible around the world.
