Conservative leader Gabriel Landsbergis warned that anti-Semitic, pro-Russian forces would seek refuge in the company of the main political parties and assured that the issues that determine Lithuania’s direction will be decided in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Therefore, conservatives once again call on pro-Western parties to define in advance – and on this basis to form a coalition of values.
“I don’t know why I should still answer – I am standing for parliamentary elections, I have a single mandate. We are organising a very important election campaign, in which, in my opinion, certain issues that will determine the direction of Lithuania will be resolved,” Landsbergis told reporters at the Adutishkis border crossing on Monday when asked if he planned to stay in parliament after the parliamentary elections.
“I really doubt whether we will be able to ensure the western direction of Lithuania through some kind of choice of voters. We see that anti-Semitic political forces (…) sometimes even pro-Russian or anti-Ukrainian, gain confidence, seek refuge in the company of the main political parties, without denying that these parties can form a coalition,” he stressed.
Therefore, the politician once again called on all pro-Western political forces to clarify the red lines in advance when forming alliances.
“I think this sets a very dangerous precedent. Today, in my opinion, all political forces in democratic, liberal, pro-Western Lithuania should make it very clear what kind of alliances there will be, how they will be formed, on the basis of which values they will be formed. I think the Fatherland Alliance has a very important task here.”
G. Landsbergis has expressed concerns that the results of the upcoming parliamentary elections may result in the leader of the new ruling coalition not being the head of the Social Democratic Party, Vilija Blinkevičūtė, but the leader of Nemunas Aušras, Remigijus Žemaitaitis.
