Funeral held for British teenager Jay Slater

The funeral of British teenager Jay Slater, who died while on holiday in Tenerife, is taking place.

The 19-year-old, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, fell to his death on June 17 after becoming lost in a mountainous area of ​​the island.

His disappearance sparked a massive search and widespread publicity until his body was found. Found in a ravine a month later.

More than 200 people attended the church service in Accrington, with many watching on a large screen outside the small meeting place.

Mr Slater’s relatives have asked people to donate to the LBT Global charity, which supports families of British citizens missing overseas, rather than flowers.

The teenager, a former bricklayer apprentice, was described by his family as a “lovable son” and “precious brother” who loved dancing, music and playing football.

Before his death, he went on vacation abroad without his parents for the first time, to the tourist destination Playa de las Americas to attend the NRG Music Festival.

His friends said he then got in a car with two men he met at the event, who took him to his Airbnb in the village of Masca in Rural de Teno National Park.

Both men were interviewed by Spanish police but were ruled “not relevant” to the investigation into Slater’s disappearance.

The teenager left his residence on the morning of June 17 and walked for about half an hour before calling a friend to say he was lost, thirsty and his phone had only 1 percent battery left.

An autopsy showed his body had injuries consistent with falling from a height onto rocky ground.

His disappearance sparked intense speculation and conspiracy theories, and his family and friends became the target of online abuse.

While the service was not live, some social media accounts offered access to fake live broadcasts in exchange for Likes and money as part of the scam.
