According to an ARD documentary, the Spanish government was involved in a massive doping campaign ahead of the 1992 Olympics.

The Spanish National Olympic Committee (COE) has strongly denied that the Spanish government ordered systematic doping ahead of the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics.

“We reject any allegations that aim to call into question the cleanliness, integrity and transparency of the Spanish Olympic Movement, especially when such allegations are based on the statements of a person whose sporting career is clearly in doubt,” the European Commission said in a statement.

Fuentes was filmed in hiding

Doping doctor Eufemiano Fuentes said in front of hidden cameras in 2021 that he had worked in the shadows in the years before the Olympics “so that I could not be associated with the success of the Olympics,” according to the ARD film “Doping Secrets: The Dirty Olympics” in 1992. “The government said: ‘Do everything you have to do, but we want medals. We don’t want any positive tests.”

Fuentes, 69, was a key figure in the 2006 doping scandal involving professional cyclist Jan Ullrich.
