As planned, the President of the Republic of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, met yesterday at the Elysee Palace with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. The President noted in a press release that this was the fourth meeting between the two leaders since 2019. This demonstrates the positive development and continued strengthening of bilateral relations between Madagascar and France.
In the interview, Macron warmly congratulated Rajoelina on his recent re-election, while stressing France’s desire to support Madagascar’s development efforts and address pressing economic challenges. The French president stressed the importance of the hydroelectric plan, which is essential to address the energy shortages that Madagascar has been facing for years.
President Rajoelina also took the opportunity to discuss Madagascar’s role as Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC). He announced the upcoming IOC Summit of Heads of State in Antananarivo and formally invited Macron to attend. The latter enthusiastically accepted and affirmed the importance of regional cooperation and friendly relations between the two countries.
Currently in Paris for the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games, the Madagascar head of state also plans to continue his stay in France with state visits to Guinea-Bissau and Angola. This series of international meetings demonstrates Madagascar’s commitment to the world stage and its desire to strengthen partnerships at bilateral and institutional levels.
Yesterday’s meeting highlighted not only the importance of France-Madagascar relations, but also the two countries’ collective ambition to work together to address sustainable development challenges and promote stability in the Indian Ocean region.
