Italian scientists have found a solution to one of the most pressing environmental problems: cigarette butts thrown away by consumers.
A team from the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa has found a four-legged solution to escaping from cigarette butts on public beaches.
VERO (Robot with Vacuum) is a robot dog that uses artificial intelligence to identify cigarette butts on the ground and cleans them up using the vacuum cleaners on each leg as it walks.

The team used existing research to examine where a robot places its four legs, and then introduced the idea of two simultaneous actions.
“The idea is to connect the broom to the feet and artificial intelligence so that the neural lines can distinguish between the floor and the garbage, so that we can easily see which are the cigarette butts, and this is just the beginning.”, Claudius Semini.
VERO uses a camera system and algorithms to identify targets and find paths, and has so far successfully collected 90% of cigarette butts in various environments.
About 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are thrown away every year. They can cause damage to beaches and other bodies of water through plastic pollution, and the chemicals that run off of them can be toxic to aquatic life./tvklan.al
