Reducing natural gas peak load

Building on the success of similar programs, FortisBC is inviting natural gas customers in Kelowna to participate in a new peak schedule pilot program.
These projects can help spread peak energy demand over long periods of time and reduce energy delivery during specific periods, such as cold winter months, according to a news release.
“This is essentially a way to reduce peak-time traffic on the energy system so that we can avoid or postpone the need to build a larger energy system or ‘superhighway,'” said project manager Max Mathis.
The pilot will begin on November 1 and run until March 31, 2025. FortisBC is offering a $50 sign-up incentive for each connected thermostat. In addition, there will be a $50 post-pilot incentive for customers who reduce their energy usage during at least one requested period.
This data and participant feedback will be used to evaluate and design the program for possible future expansion.
For gas customers in Kelowna, to participate in the program, they must have one or more of the following devices at their primary residence and an internet connection to connect them to FortisBC’s partner software when they sign up for the program: Google Nest, ecobee, Honeywell Home or Sensi smart or Wi-Fi connected thermostat that controls a gas furnace.
As part of the program, participants who own thermostats will receive advance requests via email or text message to reduce energy use.
