MOGADISHU (HOL) – Former Speaker of the Somali Parliament, Professor Mohammed Osman Jawari, died of illness in Mogadishu on Friday afternoon, his family and friends confirmed.
Hussein Sheikh Mohamed, Somalia’s presidential adviser on constitutional affairs, announced the death of the veteran Somali politician and historian on Somalia’s state television.
Professor Jawali was born in Afgoye County, Lower Shabelle State in 1945. Although he was born in Afgoye, his household registration is in Burhakaba County, Bay State. Jawali graduated from Somalia National University and is an expert in Islamic law and comprehensive law.
He served as a minister in the Siad Barre government, the last to control the country before it was overthrown in 1991.
Professor Jawali is also a lawyer by profession. He has worked for the United Nations and as a scholar in Norway. He has contributed to the drafting of several Somali constitutions since 1960.
