A former scholar is awaiting extradition from a Pacific island nation to South Australia She had previously been arrested on suspicion of conspiring with her lover to murder her ex-partner.
Former history lecturer Lisa Lines is accused of being the central figure in a violent love triangle that culminated in a horrific incident in the Adelaide Hills in October 2017.
The 43-year-old’s former partner, Jonathon Hawtin, was left a quadriplegic and paralyzed from the neck down after being repeatedly struck in the neck with an axe, while Lines’ partner at the time, Zacharia Bruckner, was shot in the abdomen.
Hawtin, 36, is charged with attempted murder for the shooting death of Bruckner, 30, with police believing the younger man acted in self-defense.
However, a jury of six men and six women unanimously acquitted Hawtin in 2019 after three hours of deliberations.
During the trial, jurors heard that Lines told Hawtin, with whom she had two children, in June 2017 that she wanted to separate. In August of that year, she began a relationship with Bruckner, who lived in the couple’s home.
The court also heard Lines was in a relationship with another woman and the two discussed suffocating Hawtin while he was in hospital.
The jury heard another woman turned up at his rehabilitation centre on New Year’s Day 2018 but was stopped by hospital security before she could escape.
In 2020, South Australian police reopened their investigation and issued a warrant for Lines’ arrest.
Pacific Island nations Palau Police arrested Lines and are holding her in custody pending her extradition back to South Australia.
Bruckner was arrested Brisbane He was charged with murder on Wednesday.
The two are accused of attempting to murder Hawtin in the October 2017 incident and of hiring a hitman to jointly murder Hawtin and his mother, Rhonda Hawtin, between December 2021 and August last year.
Lines is also charged along with another woman with attempting to murder Hawtin on New Year’s Day 2018.
Bruckner appeared in court in Queensland on Thursday, where detectives obtained an extradition warrant to send him to South Australia.
Police have not ruled out further arrests or charges in relation to the incident.
