The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is pleased to welcome back Maikani Mereng Andres as a Research Fellow. Maikani has worked at PICRC for many years, having completed multiple internships there since high school, and recently graduated from the University of Hawaii at Hilo with a major in Marine Biology and a minor in Communications.

Before returning to PICRC, Maikani interned at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, studying coral spawning and growth. She also participated in an Arctic research cruise, observing deep-sea plankton, demonstrating her willingness to explore diverse marine environments and projects. One of Maikani’s responsibilities as a researcher was to conduct surveys to monitor Palau’s coral reefs.

“As a PICRC Fellow, I hope to contribute to national and global marine conservation efforts,” said Maikani. “I am passionate about conservation and am excited to contribute to this work. PICRC’s projects help us understand the overall condition of marine ecosystems, which will help improve their management.”

Maikani will join the Ocean Exploration Trust’s E/V Nautilus as it visits the Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS) in October this year for a deep-sea research expedition.

The Center team is delighted to welcome Maikani and looks forward to working with her to study Palau’s marine environment.
