The United States on Monday deported a former local police chief to Guatemala for his role in the killing of two people, including a Canadian, in an indigenous village, according to police reports.
“The former police officer who was deported and arrested is suspected of crimes against Canadians and Guatemalans,” Guatemalan police said in a statement on the social network X, along with a video showing the former officer walking down a plane in handcuffs at the capital’s airport. They added that the former police chief faces charges of “extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances” in Guatemala.
Vázquez, 33, was arrested on June 11 in the southern Texas town of McAllen, Guatemala’s Interior Minister Francisco Jiménez reported at the time. The former police officer fled to the United States two months ago after killing a Guatemalan and a Canadian in the municipality of San Andrés Itzapa, about 35 kilometers west of Guatemala City.
In a confusing turn of events, the victims were detained by municipal police, where Vázquez is chief, on April 18. The Canadian died in hospital from a beating allegedly suffered by police, while the body of the other was found days later.
Four police officers, including two women, were also arrested on charges of extrajudicial killing.
