Former Blantyre Mayor and Chigumula District religious councillor Wild Ndipo has said he plans to contest for Blantyre East Member of Parliament in next year’s tripartite general election.

And: Running as a Member of Congress

In an exclusive interview after the Blantyre mayoral election on Monday, Ndippo said his focus was now on serving the people in parliament next year.

“People were probably impressed by the way I performed my duties during my term and that is why they supported me to run for the Chigumula-BCA-Club Banana constituency MP seat next year,” he said.

Among other things, the former mayor said he had managed to restore the city’s lost glory by reintroducing city streetlights, building roads and schools, and a one-way traffic management system.

Ndippo said he wanted to give someone else a chance to be mayor.

“I am happy to see them each win the hotly contested seats and succeed me. It’s great. You know what? A good dancer knows when to stop and I have done my part,” Ndippo said with a beaming smile.

The former mayor added that he was impressed by the first free and fair election in history.

“My advice to the newly elected officers is that these are strategic positions that require addressing residents’ concerns and working together for common goals,” Ndippo said

According to him, he was happy to step down as mayor after achieving his desired goals.

Councillor Wild Ndipo served for 10 years, was deputy mayor for 2.5 years and mayor for 7.5 years, making him the longest serving mayor in the history of Blantyre and even Malawi.

Ndippo then served as the President of the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) for 6 years and as a member of the board of the Local Government Finance Commission for 3 years.
