A few days ago, Bamako severed diplomatic relations with Kiev over the alleged involvement of Ukrainian secret services in the movement of rebels from the North African country at the end of the war. According to the rebels, only a few Malian soldiers and Russian Odensk from the Wagner group were killed at that time. Kiev did not respond to Niger’s move.

At the end of the war, a group of rebels led by Tuareg forces launched an attack on the Malian army and Russian groups in northern Mali. According to the balance sheet, the rebels lost 800 Wagner soldiers and 500 Malian army soldiers. Reuters wrote that this was the worst incident since the Wagner Group (Russian: Vagnerovy) requested help from the military government to fight the rebels.

Responding to questions about the movement of rebels, Andrei Yusov, spokesman for Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Service (HUR), said the rebels had received the information needed to ultimately carry out the operation, which the Malian government considers a violation of Mali’s sovereignty, beyond the scope of a foreign agreement and support for international terrorism.

Niger, Mali and other West African countries have condemned the statements about the fighting by Yuri Pivovarov, the Ukrainian ambassador to Senegal, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast and Liberia. According to Reuters, the Senegalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned him a few days ago because, according to them, the embassy published a video on its Facebook page in which Pivovarov provides clear and unreserved support for the terrorist movement in Mali. The video has been deleted, the AP dve agency writes.

Kiev did not react to Niger’s move. Earlier, he declared Mali’s decision short-sighted and short-sighted and denied the accusation that he supported international terrorism. The Ukrainian government stressed that Ukraine unconditionally abides by international law and respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries. Due to Russia’s unprovoked armed aggression, Ukraine is working with the support of the international community to restore justice and respect international law, with the goal of protecting all countries of the world, especially African countries, from attacks. Ukrainian diplomacy said that sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

The Wagner family in Mali

The diplomatic row comes as Ukraine tries to gain global support for its defense against Russian military aggression.

The elders of the Wagner group played a key role in some of the toughest fighting during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Questions were raised about his future after Yevgeny Prigoin was killed in a plane crash last August. This happened two months after he led an uprising against Russian troops. The group is currently active in Africa.

Mali will see a military coup in 2020 and 2021. The army chief of staff claims that trainers are being sent to the country to help Malian soldiers using equipment purchased from Russia. According to them, this has nothing to do with the past. The Baza Telegram channel claims that the Wagner family has been in Mali since at least 2021.

Mali has been fighting violence for more than 20 years. Despite two UN peacekeeping missions, extremists have risen to power, particularly in the country’s central and northern regions, where Islamic law has been introduced in some areas. The situation was complicated by the collapse of a peace deal with the local Tuareg people in 2015.
