Fly Fishing Legend Ansil Saunders Pass

NASSAU | The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MENR), the Bahamas Fly Fishing Industry Association (BFFIA) headed by President Prescott Smith, along with the entire Board of Directors and hundreds of fly fishing guides across the Bahamas extend their deepest condolences to the family of Ancel Sanders.

Ancel Sanders was more than just a fly fishing guide, he was a beacon of knowledge, a guardian of our waters, and a passionate advocate for the protection of marine habitats. His life’s work has profoundly influenced the fly fishing industry in The Bahamas, which has been an integral part of our culture for more than a century.

Born and raised in Bimini, Ansel is a unique figure in the fly fishing community. His dedication to guiding anglers through the pristine waters of the Bahamas for over fifty years is unmatched. His ability to find the most elusive fish, his passion and generosity of spirit have earned him legendary status in both the local and international fly fishing communities.

Ansel’s contributions went far beyond his skills as a guide. He was a tireless advocate for environmental protection and worked diligently to ensure that future generations would enjoy the natural beauty and abundance he cherished.

Ansel’s impact extends beyond his guiding career. He made history as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s personal guide during his visit to the Bahamas. Guided by Ansel’s steady guidance and profound wisdom, Dr. King found solace and inspiration in the waters of the Bahamas. Their time together on the water was a testament to Ansel’s ability to create deep connections with people from all walks of life, sharing his love of nature and commitment to peace and justice.
