JAKARTA: Floods killed 13 people and injured two others in eastern Indonesia’s North Maluku province on Sunday (Aug 25), authorities said.
The country’s disaster management agency BNPB said flooding caused by heavy rains since Saturday also severely damaged 10 houses in the city of Ternate.
The BNPB predicted that heavy rains are likely to continue over the next few days and warned local residents to take precautions.
“We urge people to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of the authorities regarding possible subsequent flooding,” spokesman Abdul Muhayri said in a statement.
The BNPB said it had sent a team to assist in evacuating victims. Search and rescue agency Basarnas also said it was working to evacuate victims hit by landslides and debris swept away by floods.
In May, floods and mudslides killed more than 60 people in West Sumatra, Indonesia.
