Floods have destroyed at least 20 villages and killed 30 people in eastern Sudan, but the actual number of victims is likely to be much higher, a United Nations report said on Monday, Reuters reported.
On Sunday, flooding caused by heavy rains breached the Arbat Dam, just 40 kilometers north of Port Sudan, the country’s de facto capital and home to the government, aid agencies and hundreds of thousands of displaced people.
“The area is unrecognisable. Power and water pipes are destroyed,” Omar Eissa Haroun, director of the Red Sea state water authority, said in a message posted on WhatsApp.
An estimated 150 to 200 people are missing.
According to the United Nations, around 50,000 people have been affected by the floods, but this figure only covers the western area of the dam as the eastern side is inaccessible.
Arbat Dam is the main source of water for Port Sudan, a major city that is also home to the country’s main Red Sea port and a functioning airport.
