Heavy rains have hit Jur River district in Marial-Baypayán province since last month, displacing at least 530 families.
Residents said their crops and livestock were also affected by the floods, which were caused by the construction of a road by the African Resources Company (ARC).
Speaking to Maluil Boma radio, resident Joseph Manok said their situation was deteriorating.
“The number of collapsed houses is increasing and the condition of the affected people is worsening day by day as most of the crops have also been affected,” Manok said.
He said the road construction company had closed the waterway after failing to install a culvert.
Manok appealed to ARC to provide channels for water to flow out of the affected areas.
Residents have called on humanitarian organizations and the state government to provide them with mosquito nets and other medical aid.
The affected areas include Maluil, Kwaj-Ayok, Madhuk, Kuol-Khor and Akacyic.
Atong Thiep said most families were affected, with their children lying sick in bed due to the cold.
“All the houses were destroyed. We just kept watching our children because the children could have drowned,” Tip said.
Western Bahr el Ghazal State Agriculture Minister Valentino Akec visited the area and confirmed the impact of the floods.
Akek said the ministry and FAO will assess the situation of the affected population within two weeks to determine whether to provide assistance.
The minister said the state government will ensure that those affected are helped.
He noted that the state government will also work with construction companies to address the causes of the flooding.
