North Miami will host a vibrant cultural event this Labor Day weekend with “A Taste of Africa,” a food celebration highlighting the rich culinary traditions of the African diaspora.

The “A Taste of AfriKin” event, scheduled for Sunday, September 1, 2024, from 5pm to 9pm at Maison AfriKin (Scott Galvin Community Center, 1600 NE 126th Street, North Miami, FL 33181), will offer attendees the opportunity to taste a variety of traditional and innovative dishes from all over Africa around the world. Strategically located in the Miami Spice Center, the event adds to the vibrancy of the city’s culinary scene.

More than just a feast, this evening is an immersive experience that brings Afrocentric culture to life through music, entertainment, and of course, food. Local and regional vendors will showcase their culinary skills, combining traditional flavors with Afrofuturistic innovations for a unique dining experience.

In addition to culinary delights, the “Flavors of Africa” ​​event is dedicated to promoting North Miami as a vibrant tourism destination. The event will provide a platform for partner organizations to promote their brands while focusing on the development of arts, culture and tourism in Greater South Florida.

North Miami District 1 Councilman Scott Galvin expressed his enthusiasm for the event, saying, “The Taste of Africa Festival fits perfectly with our ‘Celebrate West Africa’ festival and I am honored to sponsor this event. It promises to be a fascinating blend of food and soul experience, further establishing North Miami as a vital hub for celebrating Black cultural heritage.”

Attendees will experience a culinary journey, sampling cuisines from the Bahamas, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, Jamaica, Nigeria, Senegal, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States and even Asian fusion. A highlight of the event is the fun and exciting “Jollof Battle” where countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone compete for the title of the best Jollof rice. Haiti also joined the fray this year, proudly showcasing their Djon Djon rice, which they believe is better than Jollof.
