“There were 140 people leaving messages in the guestbook,” said Rev. Sigríður Gunnarsdóttir when Fekir asked about the mass at Ábæjarkirkja in Österdal last Sunday. She said there were about 20-30 people in the church pews, but that was not a problem this time. “The weather was so nice that people wanted to sit outside in the sun.”

She said churchgoers came from far and wide, and many had family or other connections to Ausdalín. When asked, Sigridur said he believed more than a dozen people came to the church on horseback, but that in addition to that, several people had crossed the glacial river in the old cable car.

One of them was Hjörtur Geirmundsson, who told Feyki that he had managed to sneak into the cable car with a familiar face, Gísla Frostasyn, and his companions. “There were six of us together, and then three more people left but came back together. It’s always nice to take the cable car across the river,” Hjörtur said.
