Morelia (Mexico)—— An armed group allegedly shot and killed five women, all members of a family, during an attack on a home in the western Mexican state of Michoacan on Saturday.
The state Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reported that the multiple crimes occurred at around 4:00 pm (10:00 pm GMT) in a house on Joaquín Amaro Street in the town of Ziquítaro, in the municipality of Penjamilo, Michoacan, bordering the state of Guanajuato.
Authorities said the three victims were an 80-year-old woman, her daughter and granddaughter, aged 47 and 17 respectively.
The other two women, aged 27 and 24, are second-degree relatives of the first three women, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Neighbors in the area helped a two-year-old child, a relative of the victim, who was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries from the attack.
Outside the house, the killer set fire to a grey car that apparently belonged to one of the women.
Agents of the State Attorney’s Office collected various evidence at the crime scene that allowed them to understand the profile of the killer, which is why a strong operation was deployed in the area in coordination with the National Guard (State Police), the National Guard and the Mexican Army, as well as the authorities of the neighboring state of Guanajuato.
Just last August 3, an armed group kidnapped Maribel Juárez Blanquet, a member of the Penjamiló City Council and former mayor of Angamacutiro, Michoacán, and a woman who worked as her personal assistant. Both victims are missing.
Organized crime groups operate in this area of Michoacan, such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the Knights Templar, the United Cartel, and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel. JS
