Five free weekend games you need to buy right now in August 2024

Happy last week of August! Of course, this is bad news for some people, but it’s definitely good news for the gaming industry. We’ve got a traditional selection of free games ready for the weekend before the autumn release rush begins.

The Epic Games Store is giving away a reboot of Gigantic, a hybrid MOBA and hero shooter where two teams of five players go head-to-head against giant Titans. The original version of Gigantic quickly fell out of favor with its publisher, but the fan community kept the game going. Enough so that it’s officially getting a second chance at life. The game is available for free until August 29.

The second game released each week is the infamous Callisto Protocol – an ambitious horror game from Glenn Schofield, the creator of Dead Space. In fact, Callisto Protocol was supposed to be the answer to Dead Space after the developer left Visceral Games… but the game didn’t live up to expectations, to put it mildly. Fans of the series deserve to try it for free though. Callisto Protocol is available until August 29th.

The remake of the final third part of the series of sci-fi shooters Marathon, made by Bungie, has finally been released on Steam, without which there would be no Halo and Destiny. Marathon Infinite delves deeper into the lore of the universe and into a completely incredible meta if you dig deep enough. Before getting familiar with the game, you should know the first two first, or at least read the plot.

The night of the opening of the Gamescom show, Ex was released on Steam: in fact, it is yet another relaunch of the long-suffering MOBA Paragon by Epic Games. The formula remains the same: 5v5 battles, a roster of heroes with unique abilities, stylish graphics and a low barrier to entry.

Finally, Square Enix has released the official PC demo of Final Fantasy XVI on Steam. The publisher has confirmed that the game will be released in 2025, but in the meantime everyone can check if their computer can run the most beautiful game in the series. The demo shows the very beginning of the plot: just enough to know if you like the new, darker tone of the story.
