Over the weekend, a fisherman was killed in Belize City.

The victim has been identified as Mark Francisco, 54, of Belize City. Preliminary reports indicate Francisco was preparing to go fishing with several accomplices at the corner of Yarborough Road and the East Collet Canal on Sunday, August 4, when a gunman approached his vehicle and shot him without warning.

The gunman was reportedly chasing another person who had jumped a nearby fence and fled when, in a fit of rage, he turned his attention to Francisco, who was bending over fishing equipment in his car. The gunman called out to Francisco and when he looked up, he shot him in cold blood, the report said.

Francisco was shot in the side of the head and was rushed to Carl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Police Chief Chester Williams told reporters that police did not yet know why Francisco was shot.

“Mr. Francisco was not known to police. He was not part of the underworld. He was not a gang member. He was an accomplished Belizean and we are still trying to get to the bottom of why he was killed,” he said. “Investigators are very busy. They were out late last night gathering evidence and we are hopeful that we will make some progress,” Williams added.

He further mentioned that members of the public are providing them with information but are unwilling to make statements. ComPol Williams said that as of now, the department is searching for suspects in connection with the murder.

Judging from the information currently available, Francisco was not the intended target.
