Palau, like many other Pacific Island nations, faces many challenges in its decarbonization efforts, most recently with the integration of solar independent power producers (IPPs). With assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through the Pacific Island Energy Transition Project, PPUC will have the opportunity to improve its capabilities in grid stabilization, power diversification, and generation and transmission planning.
The first Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting of the project was held at the JICA headquarters on Friday, July 26, 2024. At the meeting, the Japanese team briefly introduced the project, its purpose, expected results, and specific activities to achieve the overall goal of promoting energy transition and strengthening decarbonization of the energy sector.
Some of the key activities undertaken during the project included review of existing energy plans, grid analysis, operations and maintenance training, grid planning and stabilization, and development of grid and power supply plans to achieve stable power supply and decarbonization.
PPUC thanks the Government and people of Japan for providing this much-needed assistance to support Palau in achieving its national renewable energy goals.
