Russia’s state atomic energy agency Rosatom announced that the fire in the nuclear power plant’s cooling system has been basically extinguished. Russia and Ukraine accused each other of being responsible for the fire.

Rosatom reported to Russian news agencies that the fire in the cooling system of the Zaparozhye nuclear power plant was caused by a Ukrainian drone attack.

“This incident can be characterized as a nuclear terrorist attack launched by Ukrainian officials,” the statement said. The fire caused by the attack caused extensive damage to the facility’s cooling system but has now been largely extinguished, the statement said.

The Russian-appointed mayor of Zaporizhia, Yevgeny Balitsky, said in a written statement that the fire was under control and the area was not threatened.

Yevgeny Balitsky said earlier in a written statement that a fire broke out in the cooling system of the Zaparozhia nuclear power plant due to shelling by Ukrainian troops.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the fire was discovered by Russia.

“We have registered that a fire has been detected at the Zaparozhye nuclear power plant of the Russian occupiers,” Zelensky said in a statement on his X social media account.

Zelensky said that according to preliminary measurements, radiation levels were normal and stressed that the situation might not last.

Zelensky said that Russia has used the nuclear power plant to blackmail Ukraine, Europe and the world since the first day of its occupation.

“Russia is to blame. Only Ukrainian supervision of the Zaparozhye nuclear power plant can guarantee normal and safe conditions,” Zelensky said, adding that they hope the world and the IAEA will intervene.

The Zaparozhye Nuclear Power Plant in southeastern Ukraine is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.

The facility was occupied by the Russians in March 2022. Currently, there have been artillery and drone attacks around the facility, which is controlled by the Russian military, and Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of being responsible for these attacks.
