A fire broke out at Malaysia’s Genting Highlands theme park on Friday (June 14), causing large amounts of black smoke to billow into the air and forcing the park to be evacuated.
Video of the incident, which was widely circulated on social media, showed flames blazing through the SkyAvenue shopping mall in the central park area of Genting’s SkyWorld theme park.
Visitors described feeling panic as the fire spread throughout the building, with some fearing the building would collapse.
Tourist Hafiz Abdul Halim, 42, who came with his wife, said they were scared when they realised there was a fire in the building.
“We obviously panicked when we heard people screaming everywhere. The police on duty did ask people to evacuate the scene and go to safer places,” he told local news agency Bernama.
Restaurant assistant Adrian Wong (32) said the restaurant had asked staff and visitors to leave the restaurant.
“Everybody escaped. They evacuated and abandoned everything to save themselves,” he said, adding that all floors were evacuated for safety reasons.
