July 31, 2024 (El Fasher) – Heavy fighting broke out in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, on Wednesday as the Sudanese army and its allied armed movements clashed with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The fighting involved heavy artillery, drones and air strikes and was one of the most intense confrontations in the city since the conflict broke out in May.

The army launched air strikes on RSF positions in an attempt to destroy heavy weaponry used to attack central and key locations in El Fasher.

Emergency forces responded with anti-aircraft fire and fresh artillery fire. Local authorities report that emergency force shelling has killed more than 60 people and injured nearly 100 in recent days.

Both sides have also deployed drones in El Fasher, further fuelling the violence, as heavy weapons clashes continued in southern and eastern parts of the city on Wednesday.

Intensified fighting caused large numbers of civilians and internally displaced persons to flee to the Sudan Liberation Movement-controlled areas of Tawila and Jebel Marra.
