Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico (Smer) has taken note of the recommendations of the European Commission (EC) in assessing the rule of law in Slovakia. He believes that the relevant departments will engage in further dialogue with the European Commission, as these recommendations do not take into account many measures that the current government coalition has already enshrined in the legal order of the Slovak Republic.

“At the same time, Prime Minister Robert Fico very openly talks about the double standards of the European Commission. The European Commission criticizes the laws and regulations adopted by the highest legislative body of the Slovak Republic in a democratic, legal and sovereign manner,” said the Press and Information Department of the Government Office of the Slovak Republic (ÚV). Fico believes that the reason is the sovereign position of the current government on many fundamental foreign policy topics, while the European Commission expects absolute obedience from EU member states.
“Prime Minister Robert Fico assesses the recommendations of the European Commission because between 2020 and 2023 the Commission turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to serious human rights violations and abuses of the criminal law to liquidate the opposition. The Commission was regularly informed. The European Commission did not make any criticism of the governments of Igor Matović, Eduard Hegel or Djudovit Odor, simply because these governments were obedient implementers of the policy of a single correct opinion.”
The European Commission’s recommendations concern, among other things, the independence of members of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, the powers of the Attorney General or the submission of legislative proposals to regulate lobbying. The Commission also recommended in its annual report to Slovakia to ensure effective and independent investigation and prosecution of corruption cases.
