As tensions rise in the Middle East, several countries have advised their citizens to leave Lebanon as fears grow that the conflict will widen. Iran has vowed severe revenge on Israel following the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
The assassination came shortly after Israel attacked and killed senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, raising concerns about a possible retaliatory attack by the Iran-backed Hezbollah.
The U.S. Embassy in Beirut has urged Americans to prepare contingency plans, and the Pentagon has increased its military presence in the region, deploying more warships and fighter jets to defend Israel from a possible Iranian attack.
Likewise, the United Kingdom has sent additional military and consular staff to assist with evacuations, and has advised British citizens to leave while commercial flights are still operating.
Tensions escalated after a deadly rocket attack on a soccer stadium in the Golan Heights, which Israel blames on Hezbollah, but which denies involvement.
The recent violence, including the deaths of Shukur and Haniyeh, has complicated efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and heightened concerns about a wider regional conflict.
