The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (MAFF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced today that the MAFF Extension and Women’s Development Division in Vaololoa will receive equipment for two important projects in Tonga. The equipment includes an incinerator for the One Health project and electronic equipment for the Digital Villages Initiative.
“We are delighted to receive these important equipment from FAO. This support will undoubtedly empower our communities, especially women, and increase our resilience and sustainability,” said Ms Kalati Hafoka, Acting Chief Executive Officer of MAFF.
The One Health project aims to integrate human, animal and environmental health to achieve comprehensive health outcomes, and the new incinerator will improve waste management, particularly biomedical and agricultural waste.
The Digital Village Program is committed to promoting innovation in Tonga’s agri-food systems with an emphasis on gender sensitivity. The equipment handed over included screening nets, water tanks, laptops and other digital tools. The program aims to increase agricultural productivity, promote digital literacy and ensure gender inclusion in agri-food systems.
“This handover symbolizes our commitment to supporting Tonga in achieving sustainable agricultural development and improving public health,” said Joseph Nyima, FAO Food and Nutrition Officer.
Deputy Prime Minister Samiu Kuita Vaipulu thanked FAO and encouraged women’s groups to use the equipment to establish sustainable backyard gardens, promote healthy diets and identify potential agricultural business opportunities.
