FANM YO LA calls for greater participation of women in state institutions

FANM YO LA, the feminist group for Haitian women in political life, pays tribute to the courage of the Haitian people and notes with satisfaction the respect shown by all sectors of society for the agreement reached on April 7, 2024. However, the structure of the organization reminds the Presidential Transition Council and the appointed Prime Minister that in a country where 52% of the population is made up of women, they play a vital role in both the formal and informal sectors, fighting side by side with men every day.

Faced with this observation, the FANM YO LA structure believes that it is imperative to include women in the state machinery so that they can actively participate in decision-making related to the state.

In its note, the group stressed that it is unacceptable and a step backwards to have only one woman in the Transitional Presidential Council, and only as an observer without voting rights. FANM YO LA urges the Prime Minister, the President of the Transitional Council, members of the Portuguese Communist Party and all sectors involved in the formation of the Government to choose competent candidates, whether women or men.

In order to achieve the goals of the agreement, especially to end insecurity and organize elections, the collective stressed the need to include women in the transition process. The collective recalled that, according to article 17.1 of the Haitian Constitution, any structure that does not include at least 30% women does not respect the rules of the democratic game.

FANM YO LA takes this opportunity to express gratitude to those who are committed to helping children, men and women escape from their current conditions of poverty and insecurity.
