Apia, Samoa – August 20, 2024 – Renowned Samoan writer and poet Papalii Sia Figiel has applied for bail and Judge Fepulea’i Amperosa Roma has set September 9 to hear the application.
Last week, Papalli’s lawyers did not proceed with the bail application due to the possibility that the defendant might withdraw his not guilty plea to one charge; however, the defendant changed his mind, leading to the application being made yesterday.
The defendant faces five charges including murder, manslaughter, assault, grievous bodily harm and actual assault occasioning bodily harm.
A hearing is scheduled for March 2025, with prosecutors opposing bail.
The deceased was a scholar, renowned writer and poet from American Samoa.
