Apia, Samoa – July 30, 2024 – Renowned writer and poet Papalii Sia Figel, through her lawyer Unasa Iuni Sapolu, pleaded not guilty to the six charges against her.

Charges include murder, possession of a dangerous weapon, manslaughter, grievous bodily harm, assault and actual bodily harm.

Her trial is scheduled for March 2025, but will be reconvened next Monday to allow lawyers to submit a bail application and provide an update on the defendant’s psychiatric evaluation report.

Figuel is accused of murdering American Samoan scholar and author Dr. Caroline Sinavaiana-Gabbard, 78, in Vaivase-uta in late May.
