Paris, July 24 (Agencies): The role of women in Kuwait’s sports delegation will be highlighted at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, which will open tomorrow (Friday) and last until August 11. The Games are historic, with nine Kuwaiti athletes participating, four of whom are women, the largest female delegation in Kuwait’s Olympic history. In addition to swimmer Lara Dashti and track and field athlete Amal Al-Roumi, rower Suad Al-Faqaan and sailor Amina Shah are also making their mark in marine sports, marking the first time that Kuwaiti women will participate in the Olympics.
Amina Shah, a member of the national sailing team, will compete in the ILCA 6 class at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She is the first Kuwaiti Gulf athlete to compete in an Olympic sailing competition. Shah described the achievement as a “historic milestone,” expressing her pride and determination to do her best. She intends to do everything she can to achieve her goal and proudly represent Kuwait on this global stage.
Wajdi Al-Dari, coach of the Kuwait National Rowing Team, said that Suad Fakkan’s preparations began in January when she travelled to Hong Kong for a training camp for the Asian qualifiers in South Korea. Afterwards, Fakkan continued with her rigorous daily training. She also attended a 21-day external training camp in Uzbekistan, which focused on physical fitness and improving technical skills. The final stage of preparations included a 10-day training camp in Paris to perfect technical skills and ensure mental preparation.
The rowing competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympics will begin on July 27 and end on August 3. Dari noted that Fakaan, who will compete in the finals, has been preparing carefully, including testing her boat in the Olympic Village. The coach stressed the importance of the last few days so that she can stay focused and be mentally and technically prepared for the competition. Dari concluded that Fakaan’s goal to excel at the Paris 2024 Olympics reflects Kuwait’s commitment to promoting women’s sports, especially rowing.
The Kuwaiti team includes: Yaqoub Al-Youha and Amal Al-Roumi (athletics), Khaled Al-Mudhaf and Mohammad Al-Daihani (shooting), Yousef Al-Shamlan (fencing), Amina Shah (sailing), Souad Al-Faqaan (rowing), Lara Dashti and Mohammad Zubaid (swimming).
Duij Al-Otaibi, president of the Kuwaiti Shooting Federation, praised the strong support of the political leadership for the shooting sport in Kuwait. He stressed that the international championships named after His Highness the Emir and His Highness the Crown Prince are a symbol of this support. Despite the challenges, Al-Otaibi is confident that Kuwaiti shooters will perform well. He recalled that shooting is the only sport in which Kuwait has won four Olympic medals, including the bronze medal won by Abdullah Rashidi at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Al-Otaibi expressed hope that Kuwait will achieve another success in its Olympic history.
Khaled Al-Foudari, Secretary General of the Kuwait Marine Sports Club, expressed his pride at the rowing and sailing qualifications of Al-Faqaan and Amina Shah, noting that these achievements reflect the progress of marine sports in Kuwait and the club’s efforts to support Kuwaiti athletes in cooperation with the national sports authorities.
Faisal Al-Dasem, treasurer of the Kuwait Athletics Association, highlighted the qualifications of Yaqoub Al-Youha and Amal Al-Roumi in athletics, obtained through three training camps starting in May. Al-Roumi will compete in the 800m on August 2, while Al-Youha will compete in the 110m hurdles on August 4. Al-Dasem wished them good luck.
Abdulkareem Al-Shamlan, Chairman of the Kuwaiti Fencing Association, said that Yusuf Al-Shamlan has been training for the Olympics in Italy. Al-Shamlan qualified for the Olympics after a strong performance at the World Fencing Championships in Hungary, defeating a competitor from Hong Kong. Al-Shamlan ranked 24th in the latest international fencing championships and 28th in the world, reflecting his unremitting efforts over the past four years. Finally, Kuwaiti swimming coach Ayman Al-Enezi pointed out that the preparations of Dashti and Mohammed Zubaid are underway in Turkey. Zubaid will compete in the 100m freestyle, while Dashti will compete in the 100m breaststroke.
