The Formula 3 Championship was decided at Monza on Sunday morning. It was indeed a thrilling finale, with the outcome decided right down to the very last corner of the entire season.
Before the final, there were still three drivers with a good chance of winning: Leonardo Fornaroli, who started from pole position, Gabriele Mini (3rd) and Luke Browning (13th) – Arvid Lindblad still had a theoretical chance, but a lot of crazy things would have to happen later.
Thus, championship leader Fornaroli started from pole position, next to Alex Dunne, ahead of championship candidate Mini, Sami Meguetounif, Santiago Ramos, Sebastian Montoya, Joshua Dufek, Christian Mansell, Mari Boya, Dino Beganovic, Tasanapol Inthrapuvasak and Tim Tramnitz. The winner – Browning had to start from 13th place and actually hope for a miracle.
Fornaroli got off to a good start, but Dunne also emerged at the end of the first lap – the championship leader seemed unwilling to take too many risks in defense. Meg Tunif was behind him, and Meaney, Montoya and Ramos were ahead.
A few laps later, Browning’s championship chances finally ended: he had problems in the Ascari variant, which also caused several other drivers, including Nikolay Zorov, to crash, so that the safety car had to re-enter the track.
With everything cleared, the greens could be swung again, with Dunne, Fornaroli, Meg Tuniffe and Meaney in the lead. Fornaroli immediately took the lead back from Dunne, but less than a lap later he made a mistake and dropped back to fifth, behind Mansell… and Meaney, who had all but suddenly taken the lead in the standings.
However, Mini was almost immediately outwitted by Mansell and ended up ahead of Fornaroli, after which the two battled for fourth place. Fornaroli pushed his car through, regained the position and took the actual lead in the championship battle.
Meanwhile, Meguetounif took the lead, ahead of Dunne and Mansell, while Fornaroli was some distance away in fourth, but ahead of Mini. As the final stint slowly but surely approached, Fornaroli once again picked up the pace, taking third place from Dunne.
With three laps to go, Fornaroli and Mini had passed Mansell and Dunne, and they then battled hard for second place – for Fornaroli, third behind Mini was no problem as long as Megatunif stayed ahead.
On the penultimate lap, the situation changed again: Mini passed Fornaroli, who was soon overtaken by Mansell, leaving Mini in virtual lead again. Fornaroli pulled out all the stops to get Mansell back, and he succeeded in the last parabolica.
Meguetounif had a great win before all the see-saw battles, with Mini in second place but Fornaroli in third, which gave him the title – without any wins this year.
