Max Verstappen took pole position for the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix. The Dutchman qualified 1.03.314 in his Red Bull, making him significantly faster than Lando Norris’ McLaren and George Russell’s Mercedes.
After the sprint session earlier in the day, all the teams did a lot of work on the cars to make them faster for the rest of the weekend. This meant that the track was very stressful in the first quarter, with all the drivers doing a lot of running. Drivers like Verstappen drove on old tyres, while others had to use new tyres. It was exciting, as the top twenty times were all within eight tenths of a second. In the end, Alexander Albon, Lance Stroll, Valtteri Bottas, Logan Sargent and Guanyu Zhou finished the race after the first session.
The second act was exciting again, with everyone running two laps again, although Verstappen didn’t need to. Teammate Sergio Perez had to go all out to continue and used up all the new soft tires. After the flag fell, Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, Kevin Magnussen, Yuki Tsunoda and Fernando Alonso retired.
Verstappen immediately set the tone for Q3 with a 1.04.426, well behind Norris and Russell. In the second run, which was slightly faster at 1.04.314, Norris and Russell retained their positions thanks to improved times. Carlos Sainz was fourth fastest, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, who ruined his final run by missing the inside of the corner several times from the fourth turn onwards and running through the gravel several times. Oscar Piastri also went too wide and had to settle for seventh, ahead of Perez, Nico Hülkenberg and Esteban Ocon.
