SALALAH: The Oman Animal and Plant Genetic Resources Centre (Mawarid), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, on Wednesday began experimental cultivation of rare fungi with medicinal and nutritional value from Dhofar governorate.

This phase is part of the research project “Wild Fungi in the Sultanate of Oman”, implemented by the Mawarid Center in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture and Marine Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University, with support from Dhofar University and funding from the Agriculture and Fisheries Development Fund.

The cultivation project will cover different areas of Dhofar, where the fungi will be isolated from their natural environment and transferred directly to the laboratory for experiments, where they will be carried out in incubators that provide the fungi with a specific nutritional environment under specific conditions.

Moza bint Mohammed al Kharousiyah, head of the Mawarid Centre’s research facilities and deputy project manager, said the project’s success would open up prospects for sustainable investments in certain fungi.

She added that experimenting and growing these fungi is important in the context of the challenges facing the natural environment, such as climate change and over-harvesting. Earlier, the Mawarid Center announced the discovery of eight fungi known to the world for the first time in Dhofar Governorate, which will join a variety of other rare fungi endemic to the Sultanate of Oman and the Arabian Peninsula. — ONA
