At the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Riga, defending Estonian figure skating champion Elina Goidina, who was fourth in the free event, moved up two places to finish second.
Goydina scored 62.05 points in the short program and 120.18 points in the free program on Friday, just behind champion Mao Shimada’s 133.19.
The Japanese woman, Ikura Kushida, who finished second in the short program, only scored 99.65 points in the free program, while South Korean Ko Na-yeon scored 113.12 points in the program. Goydina managed to surpass them and finished the GP stage in second place and ranked first with 182.23 points.
Goydina became the first Estonian to win a medal at the Junior Grand Prix stage since Svetlana Isakova in 2007. “I’m so happy, I can’t believe I did it!” Goydina said. “I didn’t expect it, I’m speechless!”
Shimada remained in first place with 204.86 points, and the top three also included a high total score of 176.86 points, or more than five and a half points less than the Estonian.
Estonian ice dancers Arina Beljajeva and Frederic Merilo scored 29.90 points in Friday’s rhythm dance and will face Saturday’s free dance in 14th place. Yegor Matsenko also competed in the men’s junior category, finishing 17th in the short program with 49.05 points.
