Due to the recent hot weather, keepers at the Košice Zoo are paying extra attention to the animals. The continued high temperatures require adjustments to the feed ration from a nutritional point of view. Some animals are offered a portion of the feed in a frozen state for species selection.

“We offer this type of ice cream to certain types of primates, bears or wild beasts. The animals love it, it’s something new for them, they don’t get it every day, and they welcome the variety and a bit of calm,” says lead zoologist Patrik Pastorek.

On Wednesday, the bears received frozen beef soup and fruit slices, which included raspberries, watermelon, blueberries and vegetables. The iced tea snack was also welcomed by lioness Laura. In her frozen rations, in addition to beef soup, she also found meat slices and fish slices. The lemurs were also happy with the fruit ice cream.

Eva Malešová, head of the education and marketing department at the Košice Zoo, further revealed that in hot weather, animals eat more water-rich food, more fruits and vegetables.

The animals appreciate the cooling water in enclosures with streams running through them, such as the brown bears’ enclosure, although the number of streams has diminished now. Some of the animals will give their keepers a bath with a hose to refresh them.

“The brown emus really enjoy their showers. Although at first glance it may not seem that emus are looking for water, they are excellent swimmers,” explains Pastorek. According to him, llamas also have a positive relationship with water. “Of the three llamas we have, the alpaca llama took a shower today. They really want to be able to get water on a hot day,” he adds.

All animals are leaving their outdoor enclosures more than usual and seeking coolness inside the holding facilities. Some are finding it under trees, but also under shelters under trees.
