Our last visit here marked the beginning of the action Sipping the Sycamore The project aims to support pubs in the Otaf settlement by helping them with renovations and events until they can reopen. At the same time, we are helping the shelters in front of the pubs to qualify as temporary venues for events for the few people who return to the kibbutz.
That’s why this time, when we opened the boxes of “Shakma” (the craft beer chosen for the co-operation brand of Walla and CBC Israel), we were really excited: finally a bar with the atmosphere of a pub, with pictures of giants like John Lennon, Mick Jagger and others on the walls, and mainly: a big screen projecting the preparations for the quarter-final between Switzerland and England.
We’re not just pouring beer here because since we started we’ve found a lot of good people, not only good residents of the surrounding settlements, but also on the side of those who want to be part of the movement.
For example, Adi Abu and Tal Haliva, owners of B-12 Meat Restaurant and B-SIDE Meat Shop on Kalibach Street in Tel Aviv, were guests at our previous event for residents of Bari and Raim, in Tel Aviv, and announced that they would provide meat refreshments for the next event no matter what.
Or in the case of the Barn Company, we just told them we were looking for some snacks for those who won’t drink on an empty stomach until their burgers come out, and they loaded us up with salty snacks in a number that makes the phrase “get me Beasley in the car” sound like an understatement.
Others heard about the Sip of Sycamore project and declared: We will do it, we will hear it! For example, the Milk and Honey whiskey distillery in Jaffa has already held two events with residents of Bari, one of which was also held with friends from Kibbutz Rem, who, despite flying their representatives to Australia, did not give up and sent several cases of whiskey for the event.
Or, for example, the team at the “Amiram” bar in Tel Aviv, where all our planning meetings take place, who have just heard about the upcoming event, and Hagit Koton and Yael Bhat have already arrived to serve as bartenders as well as waitresses at the event – more volunteers have been added because if they have sent a bus to the Western Negev, it had better be full…
