This decision was taken at the foreign ministerial level during the last meeting.
With the EU Council’s approval, the legislative process ends.
The decree will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Gazette and will be implemented in all EU member states.
“The EU Council has today adopted a directive ensuring that the same visa regime applies across the Western Balkans, removing the exclusion that previously applied to holders of Serbian passports issued by the Serbian Coordination Agency,” the EU statement said.
Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric welcomed the EU Council’s decision to abolish visas for passport holders issued by Serbia’s Coordination Agency.
“A small but important victory for the human rights of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija,” Serbia’s foreign affairs chief wrote on the X social network.
These passports are not recognized by Kosovo and their holders cannot fly from Pristina airport.
The EU’s decision was accompanied by a reaction from the Kosovo government. Kosovo’s deputy prime minister said in November 2023 that “the recognition of these documents undermines the integration of the Serbian community and damages long-term efforts (on Serbian integration)”.
