The European Union yesterday criticised the conviction of two independent journalists in Hong Kong, calling it “yet another sign of eroding press freedom” in the Chinese administrative territory.

In a statement, Nabila Massarali, a spokeswoman for the European External Action Service, condemned the court ruling applied to Chung Pui-kuen and Lam Siu-tung, two former editors of the now-closed Stand News, an independent media outlet affiliated with the Best Pencil (Hong Kong) Limited Group, which also closed.

The two journalists were found guilty of conspiracy to produce and publish sedition material. Nabila Massarali also criticized the procedure for the convictions, as the trial lasted 57 days instead of the usual 20.
