27 August 2024 (Brussels) – The European Union has allocated an additional €122 million for humanitarian aid to the Horn of Africa as the region continues to face the impacts of conflict and climate-related disasters such as droughts and floods.
The EU said in a statement that the funds will help address the most urgent needs of vulnerable groups, particularly providing food and nutrition assistance, and will also provide other services to meet basic needs such as water and sanitation in areas at high risk of disease outbreaks.
Specifically, it further disclosed that the funds will be earmarked for partners working in Ethiopia (€42 million), Somalia (€40 million), and South Sudan (€40 million).
The additional funds reportedly bring total EU aid to the Horn of Africa region to more than €421 million so far this year, including an additional €56 million allocated in April to deal with the consequences of the Sudan crisis.
South Sudan is experiencing a severe economic crisis this year, while conflict in neighbouring Sudan has exacerbated the number of displaced persons and the vulnerability of the population. At least 80,000 people are expected to fall into famine conditions this summer. The possibility of flooding again in September is worrying, especially for areas that have not yet recovered from four consecutive years of flooding.
