The 40 scholars are among the 312 scholars in the Equity Leaders Program (ELP) run by Equity Bank

These scholars will join 400 other Equity Leaders Program scholars from across the region for further incubation training in Nairobi, Kenya.

40 outstanding university students will receive transformative training and mentoring at the Equity Bank Innovation Center, where they will delve into the complexities of application development, tackle technical challenges and exchange breakthrough ideas.

This six-month intensive incubation program is designed to enhance their productivity and creativity. After completing the initial training, these scholars will receive further incubation training along with 400 other Equity Leaders program scholars from across Kenya. This phase will expand their knowledge and provide valuable insights into the tech industry.

The establishment of the Equity Group Innovation Centre is significant as Equity Group is leading the transformational Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan (ARRP) to digitise value chains for 100 million customers, a plan that requires a pool of skilled technical talent and innovators.

Forty scholars from the Equity Leaders Uganda program are being trained by E&M Technology, a software development company specializing in innovation in the East African financial sector. E&M Technology was founded and is run by alumni of the Equity Leaders program.

The scholars will be nurtured in a physical innovation centre environment, participating in workshops, sharing ideas, collaborating on projects and developing new solutions for socio-economic transformation, including complex banking issues and cyber fraud.

The 40 students were selected from more than 300 Equity Leaders Program (ELP) scholars from across Uganda, all based in Equity Bank locations. The ELP program selects the best students based on their Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results from the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB)

At the launch of the Equity Innovation Centre in Uganda, Anthony Kituuka, Managing Director of Equity Bank, highlighted the bank’s commitment to developing human capital through the Equity Leaders programme and technology. “Equity has taken steps to equip the younger generation with various technical and innovative skills to address the challenges facing the future of banking in Uganda and Africa”.

He added: “In a world where technology solves complex everyday life challenges and drives development, individuals must stay ahead of the curve and continually upskill to adapt to rapidly changing global dynamics.”

Established in 1998, the Equitable Leadership Program (ELP) is a rigorous leadership development program for outstanding students that has benefited over 24,000,000 scholars in East Africa. The program’s goal is to create a community of transformational leaders who collaborate across borders and sectors to drive sustainable economic growth and social progress in Africa.

The program also aims to empower young, academically gifted scholars by supporting them in their education at universities around the world. ELP has sent five (5) scholars from Uganda and over 900 scholars from other Equity Group subsidiaries to prestigious universities such as MIT, Yale, Harvard and Princeton.
