Environmental officials will start conducting surprise inspections in the Panevėžys region from this week until the end of August to measure pollution caused by cars.

The first attacks in the city of Panevėžys have already begun.
Police will stop cars, trucks and buses on the roads before raids are carried out in other parts of the country until the end of October.
During the surprise inspections, environmentalists will measure whether carbon monoxide (vehicles with gasoline internal combustion engines) and smog (vehicles with diesel internal combustion engines) comply with established limit values.
After the amendment to the Administrative Offences Law comes into effect in June this year, environmentalists will for the first time issue warnings to drivers of vehicles that are found to have excessive emissions into the atmosphere.
Department officers will not inspect a driver’s belongings after a pollution control stop. Officers are only authorized to inspect items in a vehicle if there is reasonable suspicion that the item is related to illegal hunting, fishing, etc.
Vehicles will not stop during nighttime pollution control.
It is not difficult to recognize the department officers who stop vehicles on the road. The department officers will wear official uniforms with the words “Environmental Protection” printed on them, a badge embroidered with the words “Lithuanian Environmental Protection” and, upon request, will show the credentials of the Environmental Protection State Control Officer.
