Faida’s book led to a symposium in Sao Paulo this week, bringing together some of the leading figures in the fight against violence against women.
At the Justice for All Summit, it became clear that confronting the collective belief in the oppression of women involves two fundamental pillars: a balance of power and education or information.
It is not enough to change criminal laws, to create new ones or to defend chemical punishments that do not eliminate the root causes of the problem. None of this will be enough if judicial officials and society at large continue to view victims as guilty parties and criminals as victims.
Of course, this change involves the media as well. In panels I participated in discussing the role of journalism in this debate, it was clear that we too are struggling every day to keep this issue on the agenda without causing revictimization or exploiting tragedy to attract audiences.
Maíra Liguori, director of the NGO Think Olga, noted in a recent article that “women’s lives need to be more valuable than clicks” and that “bad journalism can trivialize hatred against women.” She believes that “in order to advance collective action and accountability, cases must be disclosed with sensitivity and extreme caution.”
But in the absence of gender protocols to guide such reporting, journalism makes many mistakes: sexualized photos of the victim, headlines that imply the woman is responsible for the violence, graphic details that expose her rather than help her.
